A part of the $557 million award will also go towards his future medical treatment. The court will also issue an order requiring railroad officials to ensure that the members of the gang's zone are properly trained and equipped with the safety equipment and procedures they need to operate their vehicles.

Hallman who was Torres's legal advisor, sought the court's approval of the settlement in accordance with Code of Civil Procedure fn. 1 section 877.6 which stipulates that courts must accept settlements made in good faith. The trial court ruled that the settlements agreed to by both parties were made in good faith, and therefore, did not constitute an unlawful or fraudulent act.
